Priorities and Decisions
Romans 7:15
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
I was mowing the lawn the other day and looked over to see a three or four year old toddler running up the sidewalk not too far from the busy intersection. I quickly looked to see who he was with and saw his mother walking about 50 feet behind him; she had one hand on her son’s bike. I thought to myself---something is wrong with this picture. Her son was running towards possible disaster and she was favoring a bicycle over his safety. Drop the bike—get the kid! Seemed like an easy decision to me. The scene caused me to think about the priorities that people have.
What is most important to you? Are your decisions in agreement with your priorities and belief system or do they conflict with them? Every day we are faced with dozens of decisions and sometimes have only seconds to make them. A poor decision while driving can prove fatal. A poor decision while getting dressed can prove to be embarrassing. It is important that our decisions reflect the person that we really are and not just the mood we are in at the moment.
God wants us to be sure of what we believe and to be ready to act on those beliefs. Are we grabbing on to the wrong things in life while what truly matters is running away from us? Have you considered how your life could be different if you embraced what you knew was most important? Maybe you would spend more time with your loved ones and less time at work. Maybe you would repair that broken relationship instead watching re-runs on television. Maybe you would get up for church instead of sleeping in. Maybe you would give some money to the hungry instead of buying that double latté. Think about the decisions you made today and if they are out of balance with your priorities then maybe it’s time you slow down and take more time to consider your actions. A person is more likely to be at peace when his decisions are in harmony with his priorities.
